Shamans of the Amazon
Directed & Produced by Dean Jefferys
This independent documentary really got my attention. Directed and produced by Dean Jefferys from Australia it weaves a story about the plight of the Amazon and its inhabitants (who are under threat and exploitation from oil companies and deforestation) with stories and details of Ayahuasca ("Vine of the dead", "vine of souls") - a traditional plant teacher used by the shamans for its visionary properties.
There is some real emotion expressed by some of the shaman interviewed, as they detail how their lands are being destroyed, and their people attacked. It is easy to share their anger even though being a world apart from it. The pollution from the oil production plants is damaging the environment, along with the deforestation. Some sobering facts from the end of the documentary:
During the making of this film:
- 16 million acres of Amazon rainforest was destroyed;
- 150,000 species became instinct;
- In Ecuador, 9 major oil spills released millions of gallons of crude oil into the head waters of the Amazon.
This documentary is highly recommended.

Excellent documentary about the Amazonian Shamans and their use of the sacred Ayahuasca vine to communicate with the Spirits of the Forest.
